We recently sponsored a pen pal project for residents of the SLI residential programs at Douglas House, Warren House, McLaughlin House and Old Farm Rockport. Pairing each resident with a different Andover third-grade student, we coached them on how to write a meaningful letter, what to share about themselves, and what questions they might ask the student. It was a fun way for residents to tap into their creativity, practice communication skills, and connect with students by sharing stories about their lives and their injuries.

Douglas House resident Lisa loves to show off the very nice letter she received from from her pen pal student
The students were excited to read their letters and eager to write back! The project created a way for them learn more about brain injuries and their effects, an important topic to explore from a young age. Via a return letter, students could ask questions in a supportive environment, helping them gain a better understanding of the challenges others may face.Â
This project sparked engaging conversations and prompted deeper reflections on how we treat others, particularly those with disabilities. It encouraged discussions around empathy, the importance of breaking down stigma, and how we can all work to challenge assumptions.
Through this exchange, both residents and students experienced the power of communication, connection, and compassion—strengthening a sense of community between SLI and the youth. We hope to continue the pen pal project in the future!
On behalf of the entire SLI community we wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year. Â
